Latin America and Central Europe in 1968: Political Left, Social Movements and Mutual Influences in the Year of Upheavals

1968 was a year of profound social, cultural and political change across the globe. This Worldwide Revolution of 68, a concept coined by Wallerstein, included many large epic events such as the Tet Offensive of the Vietnamese patriots, assassinations of Martin Luther King and Robert Kennedy, the May manifestations in Paris, brutal war in Biafra, or the retirement of Salazar. Many other social, racial and cultural upheavals occurred during this year. Among them were the Tlatelolco massacre in Mexico City and the abrupt interruption of the Prague Spring by the Soviet tanks. Together with the assassination of Che Guevara a year earlier, these two events marked this dynamic year in Latin America and Central Europe respectively.

The working language of the conference will be English.
