This provocative sentence of Kertész evokes the two most important problems of Fatelessness: namely the capacity of language and its relation to the reality. Is it a simple allusion to Maupassant’s declaration that “Everything in the world exists in order to end up as a book”? Kertész’s opinion is its opposite: the literature hasn’t got language to domesticate, to tame the reality.
