Current course selection

SIS provides access to CU central course catalogue and shows courses offered by all faculties. Initial letter of the course code identifies the providing faculty. Course offered by Faculty of Arts have codes starting with letter “A” (e.g. AHSV1114 Historical literature and narrative)

Erasmus students are obliged to select majority of their courses (min 51% of ECTS credits) from their host Faculty. If you were nominated for whole academic year, the 51% rule applies to the sum of credits received in both semesters.

Tip: Don’t forget to use appropriate semester and language filter to narrow down your course search results, otherwise it will show courses taught in both semesters and all languages.

Tip: Adding a selected course on your Learning Agreement does not automatically guarantee obtaining a place in that course. After your arrival you will need to register to all courses in SIS during the online enrolment period. You will receive more information about your student profile in SIS via email and during pre-arrival online meetings.

Generally, students can select courses from most Faculty of Arts departments and institutes, but there are exceptions.

There are some departments with limited access. This means they only accept students nominated directly through a bilateral Erasmus agreement. Other exchange students cannot attend these courses.

Restricted departments are (does not apply to 4EU+ and ELAN students):

Department of Film Studies (AFV) – bilateral partners only
Department of Psychology (APS) – bilateral partners only
Department of Philosophy and Religious Studies – open to all students but with limited course selection. Current courses for exchange students are listed on department website.
Department of Anglophone Literatures and Cultures (AAA) – limited course selection for exchange students available on department website. C1 level in English required. Students outside bilateral agreements may attend only with teacher’s approval.
Department of English Language and ELT Methodology (AAA) – C1 level in English required. Students outside bilateral agreements may attend only with teacher’s approval.

Tip: Course codes with letter “X” (e.g. AXOLSPE03) are intended only for Ph.D. degree students.

Faculty of Arts offers a wide range of linguistics and philology courses in different languages, divided across many different institutes. The links listed below reflect an overview of the courses offered each year in linguistics and in various other languages – please note that there tends to be some fluctuation in the course offerings from year to year, so not all of the courses visible now will necessarily be available next academic year (and certain courses, like diploma seminars, may not be appropriate for exchange students).

There are courses in English, German, French, Russian, and Spanish at Faculty of Arts Language Centre starting at the A2/B1 level.

Tip: It is not recommended that students choose a large number of courses at the Language Centre for capacity reasons. Learning Agreements including only courses offered by the Language Centre will be rejected.

are offered every year in English by our Institute of General Linguistics, our Institute of Phonetics, and our Institute of Czech Language and Theory of Communication. The Institute of Comparative Linguistics offers the unique opportunity to study various historical Indo-European languages.

Tip: Next to each language below, the minimum starting level required for courses taught in the target language (or without use of Czech) is listed. Students who can study in Czech will have access to other languages which do not appear on this list (Korean, for instance). For those languages with no link to courses, contact the relevant department coordinator for further information

German (level B1 required): Courses in literature, culture, and language at the Institute of Germanic Studies, course codes starting ADE. Our departments of History also sometimes offer courses taught in German, course codes starting AHS.
French (level B2 required): Courses in literature, culture, and language at the Institute of Romance Studies, course codes starting AFR. Our Department of Czech History also sometimes offers courses taught in French, course codes starting AHS (not every semester).
Spanish (upper level B2 required): Courses in literature, culture, and language at the Institute of Romance Studies, course codes starting ASP or AHP. There are also courses offered in Spanish at our Centre for Ibero-American Studies, codes starting AIH.
Italian (level B1 required): Courses in literature, culture, and language at the Institute of Romance Studies, course codes starting AIT.
Serbian (starting at level B1, lower level courses may be available based on agreement with the department): Language courses at the Department of South Slavonic and Balkan Studies, codes starting AJVES or AJS. Please note that not all levels will be taught every semester.
Croatian (starting at level B1, lower level courses may be available based on agreement with the department): Language courses at the Department of South Slavonic and Balkan Studies, codes starting AJVES or AJS. Please note that not all levels will be taught every semester.

Finnish (for beginners): The Institute of Germanic Studies, Finnish studies program offers an Open course for beginners in winter semester, and a follow-up course in summer semester which requires A1 in Finnish (or completion of the winter semester course). Students with higher-level Finnish may be able to join higher-level courses upon consultation with the department.
Basque and Galician are sometimes offered at an introductory level by the Institute of Romance Studies, with the language of instruction being either English or Spanish (not available every semester).
Albanian (starting at level B1, lower level courses may be available based on agreement with the department): Language courses at the Department of South Slavonic and Balkan Studies, codes starting AJS. Please note that not all levels will be taught every semester.
Russian (level B1 required): Language and culture courses at the Institute of East European Studies, course codes starting AVES.
Swedish (level B2 required, C1 at MA level): Language and some literature courses at the Institute of Germanic studies, course codes starting ASV or ASK.
Danish (level B2 required, C1 at MA level): Language and some literature courses at the Institute of Germanic Studies, course codes starting ADK or ASK.
Dutch (level B2 required, C1 for MA level): Language and some literature courses at the Institute of Germanic Studies, course codes starting ANL.
Norwegian (level B2 required, C1 at MA level): Language and some literature courses at the Institute of Germanic Studies, course codes starting ANO or ASK.
Catalan (level A2 required): Language courses at the Institute of Romance Studies, course codes starting ASPV or ASZRS.
Ukrainian and Latvian (starting at intermediate level) are sometimes available at the Institute of East European Studies.
Hebrew, Arabic, Persian, and Turkish (level B2 required) are sometimes available based on individual agreement with the Department of Middle Eastern Studies.
