Extraordinary Professors

The position of Extraordinary Professor may be established by the Rector for an area of education in which Charles University holds institutional accreditation.

The position may be held by an individual who has attained a status abroad comparable to that of an Associate Professor or Full Professor, or by a distinguished expert with at least 20 years of professional experience in the relevant field.

The title does not entitle its holder to use the academic abbreviation “prof.” before their name. However, in connection with their academic activities, the individual may use the designation “mimořádný profesor Univerzity Karlovy” in Czech, or “Extraordinary Professor at Charles University” in English.

The Rector makes separate decisions regarding the establishment of the position and the appointment of an individual to it.

The position is established on the basis of a proposal from the Faculty’s Scientific Council; the title is conferred following deliberation by the University’s Scientific Council.

Proposals for the establishment and appointment to the position may be submitted concurrently.

The awarding of the title of associate professor is governed by the following regulations:

  1. Proposal for the establishment of a position for a specific individual, submitted to the Dean of the Faculty.
    The proposal must include the following documents and is submitted via the Research Department:
    • the text of the proposal (a mandatory form is available for download on the website of the Rectorate of Charles University),
    • the candidate’s publication record,
    • the candidate’s teaching activities,
    • copies of diplomas and proof of academic degrees obtained,
    • a plan outlining the candidate’s intended future academic engagement.
    • The proposal must be submitted in both printed and electronic form (the proposal itself in Word format; all other documents in PDF).
  2. The Dean may endorse the proposal and present it to the Dean’s Board and the Faculty’s Research Board.
  3. Deliberation of the proposal by the Research Board of the Faculty of Arts, Charles University.
  4. Upon a positive recommendation by the Research Board, the proposal proceeds to the Rectorate level.

    The Rector’s decision is communicated to the Dean of the Faculty.
  1. Proposal for the appointment to an academic position is submitted to the Dean of the Faculty.
    The proposal must include the following documents and is submitted via the Research Department:
    • the text of the proposal (a mandatory form is available for download on the website of the Rectorate of Charles University),
    • a structured curriculum vitae of the candidate,
    • copies of diplomas and proof of academic degrees obtained,
    • documentation confirming the award of scientific degrees or other professional qualifications comparable to the rank of Associate Professor or Professor abroad, or evidence of at least 20 years of relevant professional experience in the given field of education,
    • a record of the candidate’s teaching activities,
    • a structured bibliography of the candidate,
    • supporting documents for the evaluation of international experience, supervision of research personnel, and research results,
    • a brief outline of the candidate’s intended future academic engagement.
    • The proposal must be submitted in both printed and electronic form (the proposal in Word format; all other documents in PDF).
  2. The Dean of the Faculty submits the proposal for the appointment to the Rector.
