Professorship Emeritus

The honorary degree of Emeritus Professor expresses recognition to extraordinary personalities, former professors of Charles University, who were employees of the university in the past and are currently retired. It can be awarded to professors over 65 years of age.

An emeritus professorship does not establish membership in the academic community but represents a way to express a person’s affiliation with Charles University. Emeritus professors have the right to participate in scientific research at the University, including the use of its equipment or information technologies. They also have the right to be given the floor at meetings of members of the academic community.

The degree of professor emeritus is awarded by the Rector on the proposal of the Faculty’s Research Board.

  1. Nomination of a professor to the Dean of the Faculty. The nomination must include the following documents and is submitted via the Research Department:
    • Text of the proposal. A mandatory template is available on the Charles University website. The proposal is submitted both in printed and electronic form (proposal in Word, others in PDF).
    • Structured CV of the candidate.
    • List of the candidate’s publications.
    • Overview of the candidate’s teaching activities.
    • The candidate’s written consent to the possible awarding of the degree.
    • A high-resolution photograph suitabe for print.
  2. The proposal will be discussed by the Dean’s Board and submitted to the Faculty’s Research Board.
  3. Following a positive recommendation from the Faculty’s Research Board, the nomination proceeds to the Rectorate level. Further details on the procedure can be found on the Charles University website.

The awarding of the honorary degree Professor Emeritus is governed by the Constitution of Charles University.
