Honorary Affiliations with the Faculty of Arts at Charles University

The honorary affiliations of the Faculty of Arts, Charles University were established in 2015 with the aim of strengthening the excellence and internationalization of science and teaching at the Faculty of Arts, Charles University and strengthening the ties of former members of the academic community to the faculty. The honorary affiliations supplement the university degrees: “Visiting Professor” and “Professor Emeritus” with two faculty degrees: “Affiliated Member of the Faculty’s Academic Community” and “Emeritus Member of the Faculty’s Academic Community”.

This agenda is governed by the Dean’s Provision 18/2015 (for English please scroll down).

  1. The proposal with all attachments is submitted to the Dean, both in paper form and in the records management system (spisová služba), which is provided by the Research Office.
    • In cases where the person proposed for emeritus affiliation has attained the academic rank of (full) professor, it is appropriate to propose them for the honorary degree of Emeritus Professor.
  2. The Dean will forward the proposal to the Human Resources Office to check whether the conditions for granting honorary affiliations have been met.
  3. If the conditions are met, the proposal is forwarded to the Research Department, which forwards the proposal to the Dean’s Board; otherwise, the proposal is suspended.
  4. Subsequently, the Dean, through the Research Office, will submit the proposal to the Faculty’s Research Board for comment.
  5. After the statement of the Research Board of the Faculty of Arts, Charles University, the Dean decides whether to appoint or not to appoint the nominated person. Before deciding, the Dean may request a statement from the Ethics Commission of the Faculty of Arts, Charles University, and at any time during the discussion of the proposal, the Dean may stop the process.
  6. The presentation of the diploma usually takes place at a meeting of the Research Board of the Faculty of Arts, Charles University.

The Human Resources, in cooperation with the Research Department and other departments of the Dean’s Office, provides administrative support.

  • stating the category of honorary affiliation
  • a structured professional CV including publishing activity
  • a medallion of the proposed person (one standard page)
  • a photograph of the proposed person
  • the proposed person’s consent to the proposal and the conditions set out in this provision
  • a justification for the proposal
  • a statement by the head of the relevant basic faculty unit
  • (!) In the case of emeritus membership, additionally, proof of entitlement to a retirement pension, or a document on the award of a retirement pension. The proposal, including all supporting documents and consent, may be in electronic form.

Honorary affiliations at the Faculty of Arts, Charles University are governed by the following regulations:

Dean’s Provision No. 18/2015 (for English please scroll down). In addition to defining the goals for which the faculty’s honorary affiliations were established, the provision clarifies the conditions for granting affiliations and the rights and obligations of affiliated members.
