PhDr. Miroslav Jindra Passed Away

It is with great sorrow that we announce, our beloved colleague and one of the most significant Czech translators from English, Miroslav Jindra, passed away at the age of 91.

Miroslav Jindra first worked as senior lecturer in English at several colleges, and in 1964-1976, he was employed by the Academy of Sciences. From 1976, he lectured in literary studies, Canadian and American literature, and theory of translation at the Faculty of Arts, Charles University. In the 1970s and 1980s, he was the director of the English section at the Department of Germanic, English, and Nordic Studies. After 1990, he founded the subject of Canadian Studies at the re-established Department of English Studies. He was a prolific, versatile, and acclaimed translator. He received the State Award for Translation in 2009.
A kind person, beloved teacher, maestro of translation, and merry and charming companion has departed from us. Mirek, we will all miss you…
