The Faculty of Arts, Faculty of Mathematics and Physics and Charles Games to open a new chapter in joint collaboration

The cooperation memorandum was signed by the Dean of the Faculty of Arts, Eva Lehečková, the Dean of the Faculty of Mathematics and Physics, Mirko Rokyta, and the CEO of Charles Games, Lukáš Kolek, on Tuesday, April 7, 2026. Their mutual desire to remain close partners is further evidenced by the fact that the memorandum is valid for a full eight years.

The collaboration between our faculty and the Faculty of Mathematics and Physics with Charles Games challenges us to creatively apply our expert knowledge in entirely new contexts and roles. We are pleased that the adventure of this partnership can continue thanks to the memorandum,” said Eva Lehečková, Dean of the Faculty of Arts of Charles University.

Charles Games was founded in 2020 as a spin-off of Charles University. The university has recently divested its ownership stake in the company, but the close ties do not end there. Through the memorandum, all parties have expressed their interest in further collaboration on scientific, experimental, and applied projects. Charles Games will continue to develop video games and software with cultural, educational, or other societal impact. Academic staff, creative student teams, and industry experts will remain in close contact. Charles Games may also offer professional internships to students at the Faculty of Arts or participate in educational and outreach activities at the Faculty of Arts.

The spin-off of Charles Games is another logical step in its development that was bound to happen, sooner or later. At the same time, however, the original ties with the faculties from which this project actually originated remain intact, and I am very pleased about that. I believe that our future collaboration will continue to be mutually inspiring,” said Mirko Rokyta, Dean of the Faculty of Mathematics and Physics at Charles University.

Among other things, the memorandum states that: “The tools and games created within CG are and will continue to be used free of charge in teaching at Charles University and may also be used for promotional purposes by the Faculty of Arts and the Faculty of Mathematics and Physics. Individual CG games and tools will also be freely available for potential research use.

We are pleased that the partnership with the Faculty of Arts and the Faculty of Mathematics and Physics at Charles University continues even in this new form. Collaborating with experts across disciplines is key to the quality of our work. I am convinced that this collaboration will soon give rise to other projects that will make headlines,” said Lukáš Kolek, Charles Games CEO.

Through Charles Games, both faculties will maintain contact with the goings-on in the Czech gaming industry, for instance in the Czech Game Developers Association and the Prague Game Accelerator.

Both faculties have long been involved in the development and research of computer games. The Faculty of Arts at Charles University focuses on the research and study of games within the field of new media studies. The Faculty of Mathematics and Physics focuses primarily on the technical aspects of computer game development; within the master’s program in Computer Graphics and its specialization in Computer Game Development, interdisciplinary teams are formed to create video games and educational applications.

At the Faculty of Arts, Charles Games is currently involved in two projects under the Horizon Europe programme: the MEMENTOES project – a collaboration between game developers and museum experts to create games that raise awareness of historical tragedies – and the STRATEGIES project, supporting the European gaming industry in the area of sustainable innovation and contributing to the goals of the European Green Deal.

Two prominent figures from the Charles Games studio, Vít Šisler (from the Department of Information Studies and Librarianship at the Faculty of Arts) and Lukáš Kolek (a Charles University Faculty of Arts graduate), have recently received the Gold Medal of the Faculty of Arts “for their exceptional contribution to linking academic knowledge with modern forms of cultural creation and education, as well as for representing the Czech gaming industry on the international stage.”
