Sirkku Latomaa: Machine Translation – A Helpful Tool or a Threat for the Human Ttranslator?

Anotace přednášky:

During the past few decades, the translation industry has encountered numerous technological advances: CAT tools, translation memories and machine translation (MT). In my lecture, I will present a brief outline of the history of MT and discuss the extent to which professional translators currently use MT. I will then illustrate the conditions under which MT engines work well and the limitations they still face. Finally, I will consider the question whether it is likely that human translators will become an endangered species and whether MT will replace them one day.
