Lorenz Lüthi: „Berlin and Poland, 1945–1990: unexpected connections“

The Cold War history of Berlin focuses on the division of the city, the airlift, the wall, daring escapes, and spy exchanges. But the city’s history unfolds in the context of local, national, European, and global developments. From the very beginning, for example, Poland played a major role in the events in Germany’s former capital – politically, economically, and otherwise.

Lorenz Lüthi is Professor of History in International Relations at McGill University. His research focuses on the large and cross-continental developments of the Cold War. He published The Sino-Soviet Split: Cold War in the Communist World (Princeton University Press) in 2008 and Cold Wars: Asia, the Middle East, Europe (Cambridge University Press) in 2020. His current research focuses on Berlin in the Cold War.
