Konrad Herrmann: Leopold Silberstein und der Prager lin­guis­ti­sche Zirkel

Pražský lingvistický kroužek si na řádném zasedání v pondělí 24. dubna 2017 při­po­me­ne osobu a dí­lo svého člena Leopolda Silbersteina, zavražděného v létě 1941. Leopold Silberstein, filolog a filosof, byl an­ga­žo­va­ným členem jak Praž­ské­ho lin­gvis­tic­kého, tak Praž­ského fi­lo­so­fic­kého kroužku a velmi se zasazoval o účinné po­roz­umění světu v rozměru politickém, kul­tur­ním i mravním. Jeho osud je nyní v mnoha ohledech znovu aktuální, jeho dílo je pro dne­šek dů­le­ži­tým doku­mentem doby, kterou, ano, poznamenaly mimořádné hrůzy, která se však oněm hrů­zám též chtěla a uměla bránit.

Zasedání Pražského lingvistického kroužku jsou ze zásady volně přístupná všem zájemcům o pro­bí­raná témata. Scházíme se v 18:00 v posluchárně 104 hlavní budovy FF UK na Pa­la­cho­vě náměstí. Zasedání 24. dubna zahájí přednáška »Leopold Silberstein und der Prager lin­guis­ti­sche Zirkel«, kterou pronese v němčině pan Konrad Herrmann z Berlína, autor rozsáhlé bio­gra­fie Sil­ber­steinovy a vydavatel jeho filosoficko-politických spisů. Do rozpravy se účast­níci mohou zapojit v češ­ti­ně stejně jako ve všech pracovních jazycích PLK.

Leopold Silberstein and the Prague Linguistic Circle

Leopold Silberstein (1900–1941 was a Jewish slavicist and philosopher who worked at the Berlin University as a private scholar. When Hitler in 1933 came to power, he with his family went into exile to Prague. Here rapidly he came into contact with the Prague Linguistic Circle (PLK) and further scientific associations. He became a member of the PLK, gave several lectures and regularly reported about its activities in the “Prager Presse”. 1936 by order of the Foreign Ministry of the ČSR he undertook a lecture tour to Estonia and Finland. By support of high-ranking friends in the government he succeeded to be delegated as a teacher of Czechoslovak language and culture to the University of Tartu. This employment ended with the occupation of Prague by the Hitler army in March 1939. Without financial foundation, supported only by few friends, he lived in Estonia in a very precarious situation. After Estonia in 1940 became a Soviet Republic, he was employed at the University of Tartu as a teacher of Russian language. After the assault of the Hitler army on the Soviet Union he fell into the claws of the fascists who shot him in July 1941.

In his short life Leopold Silberstein wrote more than 100 publications on topics of Slavonic studies, philosophy and sociology. He unmasked the race ideology of the Nazis. He was an active culture propagandist of Czechoslovakia. His activity also highlights the relationship of Czechoslovakia with the Baltic countries. The lecture focuses on his collaboration in the PLK.
