Fashion, nature and ecologies of cinema

Anotace: It has become a common trope of documentary cinema to cast fashion as one of the planet’s greatest polluters – one that is nevertheless conveniently photogenic. While such portrayals are justified, they also direct awareness away from cinema and screen cultures’ own material histories and environmental footprints, similarly rooted in industries of resource extraction and energy use. This lecture explores their relational ecologies, probing a wider array of cinematic paradigms for depicting fashion-nature ties while asking how materialities converge in cinematic images. Drawing on recent film and ecological theory, it posits cinema as a vast reservoir of worlds in which seemingly impossible relations are rendered possible, at times prompting us to think and feel ourselves beyond anthropocentric narratives.
