Department of Romance Studies

The Department of Romance Studies consists of 4 sections: Spanish, French, Italian, and Portuguese. Academic staff specializes in linguistics or literature of one of the above cited languages. Courses taught at the department are also equally distributed into two parts: those focusing on linguistics (phonetics, morphology, syntax of Spanish, French, Italian, or Portuguese) and those focusing on literature (history of literature(s) from studied areas, theory of literature, philosophy of literature). Main research activities in linguistics are the synchronic and diachronic study of Romance languages and contrastive studies (Romance languages and Czech). Special attention is paid to the use of both monolingual and parallel language corpora. In literature, the main area of interest is the theory and methodology of literary criticism, the evolution of literary genres and their relationship to the studied areas (Lusopohone, Hispanic, French, and Italian). Special attention is paid to the outstanding authors of the Romance area and their impact on the history of literature (e.g. Miguel de Cervantes).
