Institute of Asian Studies

The Department of South and Central Asia consists of the Indological Seminar (programmes in Indian studies with major languages Bengali, Hindi, Sanskrit, and Tamil as well as the programme in Indonesian) and the Seminar of Mongolian and Tibetan Studies (programmes in Mongolian studies and Tibetan studies). Rooted in the Central-European philological tradition, all study programmes are based on rigorous language training. Literatures and histories of the studied regions are the other two axes of our programmes, along with further avenues to explore diverse aspects of Central and South Asian cultures. Our staff are researchers with a variety of methodological backgrounds including linguistics, history, literary science, anthropology, religious studies, economics, and pedagogy. This opens up wider opportunities for professional development of our graduates and makes our research truly interdisciplinary. We also publish two international refereed journals: Pandanus and Mongolo-Tibetica Pragensia. For further information see our website.
