Department of Linguistics

The Department of Linguistics continues the long tradition of general linguistics at the Faculty of Arts. It offers B.A. and M.A. programmes which are studied as double majors and which are heavily research-based, as well as a Ph.D. program. The overall orientation toward research and teaching focuses on the integration of international paradigms and traditions with local ones, including The Prague School, as well as on languages and language situations found in Central Europe. Both Czech and English serve as the languages of instruction, with the expansion of the offer of English-language courses in the planning stages. Specific research areas include language typology and the cross-linguistic study of grammatical constructions and categories, phonetic and phonological processes in spontaneous speech, contact and areal linguistics, minority languages in Central Europe, sociolinguistics of professional organizations, multilingualism, language management (theory of language problems), ethnomethodology and conversation analysis, media discourse and dialogical networks.
