Lecture by Slovenian anthropologist Alenka Janko Spreizer “Mobile ethnographies: ethnography of mobility”.

Department of Ethnology invites you to attend a lecture by Alenka Janko Spreizer “Mobile ethnographies: ethnography of mobility” on November 14th, 12:30 pm, room 138, Celetná 20, Prague. The lecture is a part of „Ethnography and Theory“ series that presents various forms of ethnography and discusses its possibilities, limits and current transformations. The series is supported by KREAS (Creativity and Adaptability as Conditions For The Success of Europe in an Interrelated World).

The lecture will be inspired from a long line of walkers-cum-writers, most of them stemming from the tradition set by J.J. Rousseau’s canonical text Reveries of a Solitary Walker (1979 [1782]). In literature as well as in research, the twin figure of the walker/writer began to multiply over the ensuing centuries. Anthropologists, having the reputation of being amongst the more creative researchers, were not immune to this influence. Lecturer will address descriptions of walking as a way of presenting fieldwork sites, walking as a human practice and walking as a methodological approach. Janko Spreizer intents is mostly related to the first approach, aiming to present fieldwork site from a walker’s perspective, allowing the walker/reader to see and understand various levels of reality embodied in the landscape.
