“I am singing”: Prague Debate on the Legacy of Henry Miller

The debate organized by Dr. Ondřej Skovajsa from East and Central European Studies at CU FA aims to discuss Henry Miller’s (1891–1980) work from today’s perspective. It will take place on 31 March 2023, 6:00–8:00 pm in the main building of CU FA, (nám. Jana Palacha 1/2; Room 326, 3rd Floor).

What part of Miller is still inspiring and precious? What part of his writing are we better off leaving to the hyenas? What role do remembering and humor play in his work? The Prague debate marks the centenary of the moment Miller met June Edith Mansfield in New York in 1923 who persuaded him to leave his job at Western Union, take a trip to Europe, and pursue writing.

The debate is also accessible via Zoom link.

Zoom participants:
Katy Masuga (Writer and Miller scholar, University of Washington, Paris)
James Decker (Miller and Modernism scholar, Illinois Central College)

Present participants:
Igor Indruch (Publisher, translator of Sexus, Plexus, Nexus into Czech)
David Vichnar (Modernism scholar, Department of Anglophone Literatures and Cultures at CU FA)
