Frédéric Volpi: Protest Movements and Islamist Mobilisation in North Africa

Department of Middle Eastern Studies and Oriental Institute of the Czech Academy of Sciences invite you to the next installment of the Middle East Lecture Series!

Professor Frédéric Volpi (The University of Edinburgh) will give his lecture on the topic of Protest Movements and Islamist Mobilisation in North Africa: Looking Beyond the Arab Uprisings on Thursday, 19 December 2019, 17:45 at Jan Palach Square 2, room 300.

Poster: MELS Frederic Volpi 1

Abstract:

The lecture will examine the logic of Moroccan authoritarianism since the independence of the country and will show that the traditional historical-institutionalist explanations do not fully capture the logic of authoritarian resilience in the country. Relying instead on rational choice explanations, the presentation will show that the resilience of the Moroccan regime results from the neo-liberal reforms adopted in the mid-nineties which have altered the calculations of the local business and political elite and aligned their interests to those of the Moroccan monarchy.
