Prof. Paul Chaisty, a leading researcher in area studies and political science specializing in Russia and Ukraine, is offering a block seminar entitled Area Studies for Researchers: Opportunities, Challenges, and Controversies at the Faculty of Arts, Charles University, for the 2025/2026 academic year.
The main objective of this new course is to introduce doctoral and master’s students from the departments of regional philology, history, sociology, political science, and other programs at the Faculty of Arts of Charles University to the broad topic of area studies. In addition, it is a great opportunity to meet an internationally recognized expert in person and discuss topics with him.

New ERA-AREAS Project Brings International Experts in Area Studies to CU Faculty of Arts

Paul Chaisty
Professor of Russian and East European Politics and Head of the Oxford School of Global and Area Studies (OSGA)
His research focuses on legislation, political parties and interest groups in post-communist Russia; political attitudes in Russia; nationalism in Russia and Ukraine; and comparisons of presidential systems.
He is a member of the Area Studies International Advisory Board (ASIAB) of the ERA-AREAS (ERA Chair in Multidisciplinary Area Studies) project, which has been running since spring 2025 at the Faculty of Arts, Charles University.
He is also the recipient of Donatio Universitatis Carolinae Chair.
