Invitation to a Debate with the American Historian Timothy Snyder

The renowned American historian and expert on Central and Eastern Europe is going to take part in a debate with Professor Pavel Barša on 22 November 2018 at 16.00 in the CUFA main lecture hall. The main topic of the debate is the resurrection of authoritarianism and Timothy Snyder has chosen the question „Is there only one way to lose freedom?“ as the motto of the discussion.

The popularity of non-liberal politicians and political parties increases all over the world and democracy becomes more and more threatened. What are the shared characteristics of those who represent political power of this sort? What are their motives, what kind of rhetorics and tacics do they employ? Which topics, from the past and the present, are vital for them? Answers to these questions help us to a better understanding of the threats we must face, and to find solutions in the present uncertain times.

Timothy Snyder is a historian and Professor at Yale University. At the same time, he teaches at the Institut für die Wissenschaften vom Menschen in Vienna and he has been residing in Austria for the last couple of years. He is the author of several bestselling publications on the modern history of Central and Easter Europe. His most recent book is The Road to Unfreedom.

The debate on 22 November 2018 at the Faculty of Arts is open to the public and no registration is required. The discussion will be held in English, without interpretation into Czech. The event is organised by the Austrian Institut für die Wissenschaften vom Menschen and by the Centre for Political Philosophy, Ethics, and Religion, CUFA.
