Institute of Phonetics

The Institute of Phonetics at the Faculty of Arts is currently the only scientific department specialized in speech sciences in the Czech Republic, and the only department educating professionals in phonetics at the bachelor, magisterial, and doctoral level. The Phonetics study programme represents a unique combination of courses including theoretical phonology, articulatory phonetics, auditory and acoustic analysis of speech, or speech technology and programming. Research activities of the Institute range from studying the sound patterns of Czech, a language quite interesting phonetically on both the segmental and suprasegmental level, to more practically oriented fields such as phonetically motivated speaker identification or the pragmatic and social aspects of human speech behaviour, whether in one’s native language or in a foreign language.
