Department of Film Studies

Film Studies is an interdisciplinary programme that focuses on the history, theory, and critical reading of cinema and other moving image media. The Department of Film Studies offers an undergraduate (BA, 3 years) as well as a graduate (MA, 2 years) and Ph.D. programme. Courses taught at the Department examine cinema and media cultures – including digital media and television – historically, theoretically, and conceptually within the broad context of the humanities. The Department runs introductory courses for prospective students. As a leading center of research into film and history and theory of audiovisual culture, the Department participates in multiple inter-institutional activities both in the Czech Republic and abroad. It is one of the founding organizers of the Czech Society for Film Studies (CEFS), a civic association of scholars, teachers, students, archivists, and critics in the field of film and audio-visual media.
