Czech Institute of Egyptology

The Czech Institute of Egyptology (CIE) contributes to the study of the ancient Egyptian culture, in particular the Pharaonic period (3rd–1st mill. BC.). It is the only institution of its kind in the Czech Republic and its scholarly contribution is respected worldwide. The CIE presents students with the possibility to study the history and culture of the Eastern Mediterranean in Antiquity (during the BA study programme) and Egyptology (during the MA study programme). The PhD study of Egyptology is attended not only by Czech graduates but also by foreign students (e.g. from Belgium, Egypt, Serbia and Slovakia), and can be studied in both Czech and English. The study program provides a detailed overview of the history and material culture of ancient Egypt, and a comprehensive overview of all aspects and stages of the ancient Egyptian language. The CIE focuses in particular on two specific historical eras of ancient Egypt: the Old Kingdom and the Late Period. This specific focus is closely related to the CIE’s ongoing excavations in the necropolis of Abusir, Egypt since the 1960s. In recent years the CIE has also initiated excavations in the El-Hayz oasis and on two sites in the Sudan.
